Iglesia Ni Cristo

In 1914, the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC), or Church of Christ, took root in the Philippines with its official registration on July 27. Led by Brother Felix Y. Manalo, the Church’s teachings were founded on strict adherence to the Bible, encouraging members to live disciplined lives and worship with order. The first congregation was organized in Punta, Sta. Ana, Manila, is quickly inspiring growth in the surrounding areas. This expansion continued across Luzon and later spread to the Visayas and Mindanao regions. By Brother Felix’s passing on April 12, 1963, INC had already established ecclesiastical districts in more than half of the Philippine provinces, creating a solid foundation for future growth.

Entering the International Stage

Brother Eraño G. Manalo became the Executive Minister after Brother Felix's death, ushering in a new era of outreach. Under his leadership, INC made its first move beyond the Philippines by establishing congregations in Honolulu, Hawaii, and San Francisco, California, in 1968. This milestone marked the start of INC’s international mission. During the 1970s, the Church expanded throughout North America, with congregations in New York, Canadian cities, and Guam. Europe saw its first congregation in London in 1972, while Australia welcomed INC during the mid-1970s. Asia became a focal point with new congregations in Hong Kong in 1974, Thailand in 1976, and Japan in 1977. Africa joined the mission in 1978, with congregations organized in Nigeria and South Africa.

The 1980s brought the Church to Scandinavian regions and nearby European countries. By the 1990s, INC had entered Latin America, establishing congregations in places such as Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and major cities including Rome, Jerusalem, and Athens. In the early 2000s, South America became part of INC’s reach, with worship groups formed in Brazil and Peru. By Brother Eraño’s death in 2009, INC had a presence in over half of the world’s regions. Today, the Church serves members from 152 racial and ethnic backgrounds in 168 countries and territories on six continents.

Core Beliefs and Doctrinal Focus

The belief in one true God, the Father, is central to INC's teachings. The Church rejects the concept of the Trinity, recognizing Jesus Christ as God’s Son and humanity’s Savior. INC relies on the Bible alone as the source of faith and practice. According to Church doctrine, salvation can only be attained through baptism and membership in INC. Unity among members is emphasized, as remaining under the guidance of Church administration is considered essential to being part of the true Church described in Scripture. Members are taught to look forward to Judgment Day and the fulfillment of God’s promise of the New Jerusalem.

Leadership, Worship, and Youth Programs

The Executive Minister oversees the Iglesia Ni Cristo worldwide, providing spiritual leadership and administrative direction. INC’s Central Office in Quezon City, Philippines, coordinates the Church’s global activities, with support from regional offices across the Americas, Europe, and Northeast Asia. Ecclesiastical districts help organize local congregations and manage worship services, outreach, and Church programs. Around 5,000 houses of worship have been built globally, offering spaces for services and community gatherings.

INC worship services occur twice a week, typically on Thursdays and Sundays. They feature hymns, prayers, offerings, and Bible-based sermons. Congregations maintain order through separate seating for men and women. Children aged 11 and below participate in their worship services, designed to present biblical teachings in a way they can understand, fostering faith at an early age.

Humanitarian Programs and Global Impact

Through the Felix Y. Manalo Foundation, INC provides humanitarian aid worldwide, supporting health services, education, and poverty relief programs. One of the Church’s key initiatives is Lingap sa Mamamayan, or Aid to Humanity, which offers underserved communities medical care, food, clothing, and other necessities.

In 2018, INC set a Guinness World Record for organizing the largest charity walk with over 283,000 participants, surpassing a previous record set in 2014. In 2022, the Philippine government recognized the Felix Y. Manalo Foundation with the Banaag Award for its dedication to alleviating poverty and supporting communities worldwide.
